Living on a Pacific Island means that we have high humidity and rain in the winter. As a result, when you explore the woods you will often come across a myriad of types of fungi. These fungi can vary from delicious to poisonous. A note to myself, get a guidebook on fungi and spend more time learning how to identify them. The large variety of flora and fauna found when walking provides a real classroom experience.
This fungus is called a bracket fungus. It will grow on the side of a tree and feed off the heartwood. Eventually, the tree will weaken and will lose branches or will be blown over. The bracket fungus is beautiful to look at, but ultimately will bring death to the tree. Hmmm, do I have a bracket fungus growing on me?
